A “Wings of Fire” animated series based on the books of the same name is in development at Amazon MGM Studios, Variety has learned exclusively.
Fans of the books by author Tui T. Sutherland will no doubt rejoice, as this is now the second attempt to adapt the books for the screen. Netflix had previously ordered a 10-episode series based on the books in 2021 from Warner Bros. Television with Ava DuVernay attached to executive produce. However, as Variety exclusively reported in May 2022, the show was among several other animated projects that were scrapped at the streamer.
The Amazon MGM Studios project has a completely new creative team than the Netflix version. No writer is currently attached, though Marc Resteghini will executive produce via Jack Tar Productions. The production company is currently under an overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios.

The official logline for series states, “Five young dragons have been raised in secret, destined by prophecy to end a terrible war. But when one of their own is threatened, they decide to escape and find their own fate—saving themselves and the rest of their world along the way.”
There are 15 books in the main “Wings of Fire” novel collection, with multiple supplementary books and a graphic novel version. First published by Scholastic in 2012, the books have sold over 27 million copies across the world and have been on the New York Times best seller list for over 240 weeks.
Resteghini was previously the head of series development at Amazon MGM Studios (then Amazon Studios), but left the company in 2022 amid restructuring. He first joined Amazon in 2014 and developed and launched shows like “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Jack Ryan,” and “The Underground Railroad” during his tenure.
Resteghini is repped by Jackoway Austen Tyerman. Sutherland is repped by WME, Writers House, and Goodman Genow.
