A coming-of-ager with a few too many false notes.
A rebellious 14-year-old raised by her grandparents tries to impress her ex-con mother in “Rebounce,” a coming-of-ager with a few too many false notes. Again probing mother-daughter competitiveness, a subject she treated most effectively in the featurette “Twinkle Twinkle,” Danish writer-helmer Heidi Maria Faisst (“The Blessing”) seems in danger of becoming a one-note auteur, with each iteration of her theme less compelling than the last. Slated for Danish theaters in March, youth-skewing pic could find its way to further fests.
Longing for the attention of her irresponsible, just-out-of-jail mother Susan (Anne Sofie Espersen), Louise (leggy Frederikke Dahl Hansen, a star in the making) enters Susan’s world of clubbing, drugs and casual sex. Although it feels in character for the feckless Susan to treat her daughter like a pal, it strains credulity that the obviously underage Louise would be admitted to nightclubs and served drinks, even if she does know DJ Hans (Dar Salim), her mother’s ex, who responds to her sexual come-ons despite her jailbait status. As in Faisst’s previous work, Dogma-like lensing on grainy 16mm stock favors handheld takes that circle the characters. Committed thesping is intense.
