When you decide to incorporate more mason jars into your home's decor you have thousands of options. But there is one option that is cheap, handy and will totally make your summer time more enjoyable.
Here at Bright Side, we love all living creatures, but when it comes to bugs, we want to keep them out of our houses. And we'll take every opportunity to do it naturally without harming them. So come join us in our buzzless, healthy lifestyle.
Mason jar preparation
For each of the recipes on this list, you will need a clean, rinsed off mason jar (or jars if you want to use them on multiple windows, for example). You can regulate the intensity of the scent by just leaving it open with the mixture inside or drill holes in a lid of a mason jar and screw it on.
For almost all recipes you can replace water content for melted wax to make the candle work faster and last longer.
Mosquito repellent recipes
Mosquitos are around every summer and can spoil your quiet nights and lazy moments on the porch. Here's what you'll need to get rid of them:
- A mason jar
- Lemon essential oil - 5 drops per jar
- Eucalyptus essential oil - 5 drops per jar
- Citronella essential oil - 5 drops per jar
- Slice of half a lemon and half a lime per jar
- 2 rosemary springs per jar
- A floating candle
Fill the jars with lemon, lime, rosemary, and drops of essential oil (without mixing them) and water. Then light up the floating candle on top of it.
If you are not so keen on citrusy scents, you can try a lavender vanilla recipe:
- 15 drops of lavender essential oil
- 3-4 tbsp of vanilla extract
- 3-4 tbsp of lemon juice
Drip it into a mason jar and fill it up with water, then mix. It can also be used in a spray bottle.
Anti-wasp mason jar traps
For this one, you will need a lid with drilled holes in it. Then put some honey on the bottom of a mason jar and dilute it with either water or jam.
Wasps will be attracted to the sweet scent, get into the holes and become stuck in the honey combination.
Anti-bug repellent recipes
If your goals are to get rid of several types of bugs, move on to mixing up these concoctions:
- Carrier oil - 1 oz
- 1 drop per jar of citronella essential oil
- 1 drop per jar of eucalyptus essential oil
- 1 drop per jar of peppermint essential oil
- 1 drop per jar of tea tree essential oil
- 1 drop per jar of cypress essential oil
- 1 drop per jar of myrtle essential oil
Mix up the oil with water and leave in a mason jar lid - just keep it away from your eyes since essential oils will burn them.
Or pick up a whole mason jar and add:
- Essential oil of cedarwood, lavender, lemon, and catnip (10 drops each)
- 1 fresh lemon and 1 fresh lime, sliced
- Several springs of rosemary
Then put the water in and light a floating candle on top.
Refresh every 2-3 days.
Anti-fly repellent recepies
As much as you can use the same trap for flies like we have suggested for wasps, you can also use this very simple and trick:
Take a mason jar full of water, put a penny inside it and place it where the jar can catch some light - flies will disappear since this threatens them. You can also use a plastic bag, but mason jars look more pleasing to the eyes.
Universal recipes
This is more of a project than a simple mixture. You can spread this one all around the house!
You will need 4 mason jars for this recipe.
- Per jar, you will need 10 drops of cedarwood, lavender, lemon, and thieves essential oils.
- Half a lemon, half a lime per jar, sliced
- Rosemary springs (2-3 per jar)
- Water
And then light the candles on top or just leave them around the house.
