The authorities in Machakos county have launched a manhunt for three suspected robbers after a botched robbery at Equity Bank in Matuu.

According to the police report, the three gunmen raided the financial facility on the morning of Tuesday, July 27, while posing as customers.
The suspects first grabbed an AK47 rifle from a police officer manning the entrance at the bank before they made their way into the baking hall,, firing into the air.

Confirming the incident, Yatta police commander Mary Njoki said the robbers later on engaged other officers who came in to help in a gunfight for about 15 minutes before escaping.

“For about 15 minutes there was heavy gunfight between our officers and the thieves who later managed to escape. One of the thieves was shot but managed to escape,” Njoki stated.Similar incident
Earlier in July, a planned bank heist in Nairobi downtown aborted at the last minute after a team of detectives got wind of the robbers' intention.
Charles Mulo, Fredrick Muderwa, Jesse Muriuki, Gabriel Mungai and Reuben Njuka had booked themselves into guest rooms in the same building, which shares a wall with Prime Bank OTC branch.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, who alerted colleagues from Kamukunji police station, the gang was about to break into the bank when they were arrested in the wee hours of Friday, July 2.
