A COVID-19 patient at the Soroti Regional Referral Hospital has given birth to a healthy baby girl barely two months after at least 10 patients died of coronavirus disease at the medical facility due to a shortage of oxygen.
The woman was referred to the medical facility for specialised treatment because she was pregnant and tested positive for COVID-19.

According to Annet Katusiime, attached to the COVID-19 treatment unit at the hospital, the patient was monitored until she delivered.

She indicated that they assessed the mother and noticed that she was not having severe COVID-19 complications.
''She had mild disease, and she was progressing normally. So it was not necessarily an indication of a caesarian section that is why we opted to monitor her until she delivered,'' Katusiime explained.Removing PPEs
She said some of the procedures required removing Personal Protective (PPE) gear to attend to the mother and the infant.
''When you monitor the heartbeat while dressed in the PPEs, it is quite difficult. So at some point, I had to remove my headgear and remain with the mask to keenly monitor her condition,'' said Katusiime.Tran Triplets: Sisters Born Four Minutes Apart All Pregnant, Set to Give Birth This Year at Same Hospital

Katusiime said that she had to be alert just in case the patient developed any complications needed to be wheeled to the theatre.
''Of course, everyone is scared about this disease, but we still kept her on a mask because she was coughing, but she never needed oxygen,'' said the medic. This comes when MPs from the Teso sub-region have donated hospital beds and KSh 1.9 million, among other things, to the facility.
''This is just to supplement government efforts and allow us to see firsthand what the doctors are doing and what is exactly happening on the ground,'' said Musa Ecweru, State Minister for Works. The referral hospital, which is the treatment centre for all COVID-19 patients in Teso Sub-region, has reported a surge in cases over the last two weeks, especially those in critical condition.
